A quick guide to weed control
Weeds threaten our environment, primary production industries, community and shared spaces. They can damage our natural landscapes, agricultural lands, waterways and coastal areas by displacing native species, contributing to land degradation and reducing farm and forest productivity. Australia spends considerable time and money managing weeds to protect ecosystems and primary production.
In pest control we often encounter weed control in both agricultural and non-agricultural areas. In the latter, weed control jobs are often in suburban lawns and gardens, public parks and other recreation areas, rights-of-way of highways, railroads, industrial plants, channels, utility lines and aquatic areas.
A weed is defined as “any plant growing where it is not wanted and commonly in competition with cultivated plants”. Weeds therefore can include any type of plant: broad leafed plants, grasses, sedges, rushes, aquatic plants, and woody weeds right up to trees.
