Insect of the Month: Indian Meal Moth (Plodia interpunctella)
The Indian meal moth is a common stored-product pest found in food storage, manufacturing and warehousing environments. Larvae cause the damage by feeding on dry foods such as flour, cereals, grains, nuts, seeds, pet food and bird seed, often leaving behind distinctive silken webbing.
Identification
Adults have distinctive two-tone forewings, with a pale inner section and coppery-brown outer section. Larvae are usually cream to off-white with a brown head, although colour can vary depending on their food source.
Mature larvae often leave the food source before pupating, so they may also be found on walls, shelving, ceilings and packaging.
Life cycle and infestation signs
Females lay eggs on or near suitable food material. After hatching, larvae feed and develop before moving away to pupate. Several life stages can be present at once, which can make established infestations difficult to manage.
Common signs include adult moth activity, crawling larvae, silken webbing, clumped food particles, pupae in cracks or crevices and increased catches in pheromone traps.
Where they are found
Indian meal moths are commonly associated with food processing plants, warehouses, commercial kitchens, flour mills, supermarkets, pet food facilities and grain-handling sites. Infestations may also arrive with incoming stock, making goods-receiving and stock rotation important control points.
Monitoring and management
Pheromone traps are useful for detecting adult male moth activity, identifying hotspots and monitoring population trends. They should be used alongside thorough inspections rather than as a stand-alone control method.
Effective management starts with locating and removing the source of the infestation. Good sanitation, stock rotation, inspection of incoming goods, removal of food residues and continued pheromone monitoring are all important.
Early detection is critical to reduce product contamination, stock losses and ongoing pest pressure in commercial food facilities.
